Health care school is ready to start Richardson campus construction

A California-based vocational college is moving ahead with plans to move its local campus from Dallas to Richardson.

West Coast University reached a deal with the city of Richardson last year to move its Texas nursing and health care school to a three-story building on North Central Expressway.

The long-vacant Richardson office building had been owned by real estate developer KDC since 2011. The building sold to a California-based investor in September.

West Coast University plans to convert the vacant office building into a campus that could house more than 1,000 students. Plans filed with the state say that construction will start in August to remodel the 136,000-square-foot building. The work is scheduled for completion in January.

Architect Gensler is designing the new campus. The improvements are valued at more than $6.5 million, according to permits.

West Coast University plans to move its campus from about 60,000 square feet of space at 8435 N. Stemmons Freeway near Dallas' Love Field.

The school has been in Dallas since 2012. It has four facilities in southern California and a location in Miami.

The 2323 North Central building was constructed in 1985 and once housed the operations of Citicorp and fashion accessory firm Fossil.
