Despite polls that show a close contest, President Donald Trump is confident he’ll win Texas.
During a trip to Dallas this month, Trump called the Lone Star State one of his favorite places.
“I know we’re doing very well here,” he said. “During the last process, they kept saying that Texas was too close to call. And friends of mine in Texas would say, ‘It’s not too close to call. You’re going to win in a landslide.’”
In 2016, few people gave Hillary Clinton a chance of winning Texas, though she ultimately lost by 9 percentage points. That marked the closest Texas presidential contest in decades.
Trump hopes to do better in November, even as Democrats and their nominee, former Vice President Joe Biden, describe the state as a “new battleground.”
“We’re doing well here again,” Trump said.
But Biden described Trump as a failure.
“As coronavirus cases continue to spike in Texas, President Trump has completely failed to get Texans the resources they need to stay safe and stop the spread of COVID-19,” he told The Dallas Morning News in a statement. “Texans won’t forget Trump’s inability to lead our country during this pandemic, and this fall they will have the opportunity to make a change and send Joe Biden to the White House.”
Given that 2020 has been a tumultuous year for Trump and the nation, some may question his cockiness about winning Texas.
Here are three reasons why Trump and Republicans are not worried about losing Texas. Democrats, of course, disagree, but let me explain the source of the president’s confidence that Texas will stay red.
